Going to graduate school is an important decision that involves serious considerations about long-term professional and personal objectives. 

General Advice

The best first point of reference is to begin discussions with one or more of your professors in the chosen field and your academic advisor.  Your professors or academic advisor can assist you in identifying graduate programs and provide you with support in the writing of the personal statement.   

If you are potentially interested in graduate study, you should begin to explore the opportunities early in your academic career. You can become familiar with graduate programs and educational opportunities along with their requirements. Then, work backward:  what courses, major, minors, extracurricular activities, etc. would both prepare an academic portfolio yet at the same time keep your options open if you are not exactly sure what you want to do? Your academic advisor, professors, and Dean’s can be of good help here.  Don’t be shy about reaching out early and getting the conversation started. There are so many graduate areas and opportunities and choices can be daunting but, with some knowledge and discussion, good choices usually become apparent as you move along in your studies.
