Study Abroad Financial Aid

Study Abroad in Rome

Financial Aid at JCU

Financing your semester or summer abroad in Rome, Italy, is more affordable than you might think! As an American liberal arts university abroad, John Cabot University aims to create a diverse community of degree-seeking and study abroad students while keeping our programs as affordable as possible.

To recognize the important role study abroad students play in supporting JCU's mission, we offer generous scholarships based on merit and financial need. Additionally, we provide a list of external scholarship resources for those seeking additional funding. JCU also participates in the U.S. Title IV Program, allowing students to use federal financial aid from their home institution at JCU.

Use Your Financial Aid at JCU

Students studying abroad at JCU may be able to use financial aid from their home school to cover JCU tuition, housing, and meal plan costs. Eligible aid includes Federal Student Aid, Private Loans, Veteran Education Benefits, and Scholarships/Grants.

Steps to Use Your Financial Aid at JCU

JCU is not authorized to administer federal loans to study abroad students earning credits towards a degree program in the US. Students can only receive Federal Student Aid from one university at a time. Therefore, your home institution must administer all of your Federal Student Aid, which you can then transfer to JCU, to meet your expenses while studying abroad.

  1. Check with the Home Institution
First, confirm with the home institution’s Financial Aid Office to ensure that aid can be used for educational expenses while studying abroad, such as JCU tuition, housing, meal plan and personal expenses.
  2. Determine if a Payment Deadline Extension is Needed
If the home institution's financial aid disbursement date is after the JCU payment deadline, complete the Payment Deadline Extension Request Form (PDERF).
  3. Download, Complete, and Submit the PDERF
Complete the PDERF with the home institution’s Financial Aid Office. Email the completed form to JCU at [email protected]. A confirmation email will be sent upon approval.
  4. Settle Remaining Balances
Any amount not covered by the PDERF must be paid by JCU’s regular payment deadline. Missing deadlines may result in late fees and delays in class registration or housing assignments. The aid listed on the PDERF will not automatically transfer to JCU; it will be disbursed to the student by the home institution, and those funds can then be used to pay JCU.
    PDERF deadlines:
    Fall: July 1st
    Spring: November 15th
    Summer Sessions I & II: April 15th
