Advanced Placement Summer Institutes

John Cabot University's week-long AP Summer Institutes are a unique opportunity for teachers to develop effective strategies for instruction of AP® Art History, European History and World History courses in the inspiring context of the Eternal City.

Due to a very positive response this past summer, we are pleased to offer all three AP Summer Institutes once again in 2020. Please note that spots are limited, so register and deposit early to guarantee your place!

Course Description

This AP Summer Institute is a unique opportunity for AP® Art History teachers to collaborate while exploring THE ETERNAL CITY, home to outstanding art and architectural examples dating from the Ancient World to the present – including eighteen of the 250 images in the new AP® Art History Curriculum Framework. Participants will focus on these artworks as well as view several other related works of art and architecture while developing instructional strategies, assessments, and research tools that support students understanding in both the western and global content of the recently redesigned AP® Art History Course. The week will be divided between classroom sessions and experiencing Rome's art and architecture first hand.

AP European History teachers are invited to John Cabot University's campus in the heart of Rome for a unique AP* Summer Institute. This AP Summer Institute in AP European History is intended for new AP teachers looking to implement a successful program in their school. Enrollment is also recommended for experienced AP teachers eager to gain insight into the redesign of the course. The workshop will create an environment of mutual collaboration among participants and the instructor affording the group the rare opportunity for on-site learning that teachers can bring alive in their classrooms. Moreover, this institute will foster a dialogue and discussion regarding issues and concerns related to AP European History.

The AP Summer Institutes are endorsed by the College Board and led by experienced AP consultants. The fee of $1,950 per participant includes class instruction, College Board workshop materials, 6 nights of accommodation with daily breakfast, private tour bus transportation in Rome, museum entries, guided tours, a welcome cocktail reception with a JCU faculty guest lecture and a farewell lunch. A non-refundable deposit of $500.00 must be paid to reserve your place in the program.

2020 AP Consultants

Robert CoadRobert Coad - AP* Art History teacher at Hamilton High School's Humanities Magnet in Los Angeles Unified School District with 25 years of experience, he has been a frequent presenter of one-day AP Art History Workshops for the College Board Western Region and 5-day summer institutes throughout the Western Region and Canada. He holds National Board Certification in Early Adolescence through Young Adulthood Art (2002/2012) and has served on the Excellence Awards Advisory Committee for the Los Angeles Educational Partnership Excellence Awards for Teaching. He is a Reader for AP Art History and was honored as a Distinguished Teacher in 2006. Since 1973, he has traveled throughout Europe with extended stays in London, Paris, Florence, Venice and Rome.


Steve CoxSteve Cox - AP* World and European History teacher with 33 years of experience in both middle and high school, he has been nationally board-certified for over 15 years, and has been recognized numerous times for meritorious teaching. He has been a College-Board endorsed AP Consultant since 2007 and a long time Reader and Table Leader at the Advanced Placement Readings. From 2005 Steve has led field studies to Europe for students and adults and has served as the Social Studies Department Chair at Dutch Fork High School in Irmo, SC. He participated in the inaugural training of AP World History teachers in 2000 and has been a reader and table leader since 2001. He has conducted one-day and week-long seminars across the United States and enjoys the opportunity to work with teachers in this professional development capacity.
