Transfer Credits

General Transfer Credit Policy for College/University Courses

John Cabot University rewards and values the work that students have done in high school or previous universities/colleges. This is why we take extra care of evaluating all students’ academic credentials that could be eligible for transfer credits prior to admitting them to John Cabot University.

JCU policies and procedures for transfer and applicability of course credits to a JCU Bachelor of Arts incorporate these basic principles:

  • We expect to verify whether or not the student's experience at the other institution is appropriately commensurate with the experience of students in similar courses offered by JCU with respect to content, academic level, scope and relevance;
  • We expect to verify whether that experience is of reasonable comparability and applicability and can be documented in some manner, (e.g. coming from a fully accredited college or university);
  • We expect to verify whether that experience is of reasonable comparability and applicability and can be documented by the student via other means such as textbooks, syllabi, exams, papers, projects, etc.

Course work of comparable content and scope to the JCU curriculum will generally be transferred if it was completed at colleges or universities accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, or other regional accrediting organizations at the time the work was completed. For international colleges or universities, the international equivalent of regional accreditation or Ministry of Education recognition will be considered.

An official copy of the transcripts must be submitted to the Registrar's Office for any coursework to be evaluated for transfer credit award. A certified translation must accompany all academic documents not issued in English. The translation should be literal and not interpretative. If the course content is not evident from course titles, students should be prepared to provide official catalog course descriptions as well as detailed syllabi.

In many cases, international credits will have to be converted into U.S. semester hours. The Registrar's Office will also determine the grade scale equivalency for each international institution based on WES and AACRAO recommendations.

Credits may be awarded for college-level courses for which students have earned a minimum grade of C while still in high school or while attending a previous accredited college or university. The following coursework will not be accepted for transfer credit and will not count toward any degree at John Cabot University:

  • Any college-level course in which the grade earned is below a C or is a Pass/Fail evaluation;
  • Audited courses;
  • Courses identified as remedial, such as remedial English, Mathematics, Sciences or Developmental Reading/Writing;
  • ESL courses and English language courses;
  • Vocational-technical courses that are offered at two-year and proprietary institutions;
  • Courses in Religion that constitute specialized religious training or that are doctrinal in nature;
  • Credits earned for work experience or through cooperative education programs;
  • Credits earned for Internships;
  • Credits earned for Independent Studies/Independent Research Projects;
  • Credits earned in PE courses, such as Surfing, Yoga, etc...;
  • Credits earned for practical, applied music and music performance;
  • Credits earned for practical, applied dance and performance;
  • Courses taken at the post-graduate level;
  • Courses or programs identified as college orientation, freshman seminars and/or first-year programs;
  • Courses considered below college level;
  • Repeated courses or courses with duplicate subject content;
  • Courses offered for non-credit continuing education units;
  • Non-Academic/Vocational courses (except for courses listed on JST transcripts).

Students can obtain a preliminary transfer credit evaluation by submitting the Transfer Credit Evaluation Form

Please note that this preliminary evaluation is based on students’ own self-reporting of courses and grades and is designed to provide them with information that is as accurate as possible. On the TCE the Registrar's Office will flag any missing documents and/or any courses for which additional documents - such as course descriptions or syllabi - must be submitted for further analysis. A final, official, evaluation will be made by the Registrar’s Office at the time of acceptance. In addition, students will have their transfer credits added to their JCU transcripts once the official transcripts from previous institutions are submitted. Transcripts are considered official if they are sent either electronically to [email protected] via authorized third party platforms (i.e. Parchment) or via airmail at the following address:
