Lyal S. Sunga, Lecturer in Political Science at JCU, is also Affiliated Professor, Raoul Wallenberg Institute of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law in Lund, Sweden, Visiting Professor at the American University of Rome, Visiting Professor at Strathmore University Law Faculty in Nairobi, Kenya, and Visiting Professor at the Addis Ababa University Centre for Human Rights, Ethiopia. Since 2014, he has also given lectures in Moscow, Kazan, Voronezh, and Yekaterinburg, as part of an annual human rights summer school program run by the United Nations in cooperation with the Russian Federation and a consortium of Russian universities.

Sunga holds a B.A. (Carleton), L.L.B. (Osgoode Hall), L.L.M. (Essex), and Ph.D. (Graduate Institute of International Studies). He has high-level experience with the UN Security Council, UNOHCHR, UNDEF, UNDP, UNU, UNHCR, UNITAR, UNODC, ILO, EU, IDLO, and Swiss Development Cooperation. He is a frequent media commentator on human rights, humanitarian law and international criminal law issues in conflict zones and he has published two monograph books on international criminal justice as well as dozens of book sections and articles in international law journals.
