For students whose level of English does not yet qualify them for direct entry to the University (see English Proficiency Requirements for Admissions to JCU), JCU’s ENLUS program offers intensive courses in academic English.
ENLUS is structured in two levels: ENLUS I, designed for students with a B1 level of English, and ENLUS II, designed for students with a B2 level. These courses provide rigorous preparation for academic study at JCU but do not carry academic credit toward graduation from the University.
The program has three goals:
The English Language for University Studies (ENLUS) program prepares students to pursue their academic journey at John Cabot University. In small classes taught by highly qualified professors, ENLUS students receive individualized attention that helps them strengthen their English skills for university-level study. At the same time, they are fully integrated into the cultural and social life of JCU’s international community and enjoy full access to all university facilities, including the library and computer labs. Students who successfully complete ENLUS are granted direct admission to our undergraduate degree programs and receive an additional scholarship toward their first semester.
ENLUS is more than an English language program — it’s a direct pathway into academic life at John Cabot University. Students not only improve their English, but also experience the university’s vibrant community from day one. Here’s what sets ENLUS apart:
Our admissions office seeks to admit students who aspire to earn a degree at JCU or another English-speaking university, or wish to achieve a higher level of English proficiency for business or personal reasons. We are also dedicated to making ENLUS as affordable as possible.

The 15-week course, which begins on the same day of the term as JCU for-credit courses, follows JCU’s academic calendar and is divided into three proficiency levels.
ENLUS II (B2) meets 4 ½ hours daily, Monday through Thursday, for a total of 252 hours. Students who are enrolled in ENLUS II and not yet admitted to the University as degree-seeking students are eligible to also enroll in one academic (for credit) course in the areas of mathematics, computer science, fine arts, and Italian if they satisfy the University’s minimum admission requirements. These minimum requirements may vary depending upon the student’s secondary educational background. Students in ENLUS II interested in enrolling in a University course should contact the Admissions Office ([email protected]) to determine if they are eligible. Please note that taking ENLUS II with an additional course will cost € 4,400.
ENLUS I (B1) meets 4 hours daily, Monday through Thursday, for a total of 208 hours. Small class size ensures that each student receives individual attention and has the opportunity to participate actively in class. Attention is also given to introducing foreign students to American culture and university life.
PRE-ENLUS (A2) meets 4 hours daily, Monday through Thursday, for a total of 208 hours.
Small class size ensures that each student receives individual attention and has the opportunity to participate actively in class. Attention is also given to introducing foreign students to American culture and university life.
In order to pass ENLUS 2, students must have a final score of 55% or above. Students with exceptionally high final scores will be given the chance to take the English Composition Placement Examination and perhaps place into EN 105. Students with final scores near the passing grade will be given the chance to take the English Composition Placement Examination to determine if they can be admitted into JCU. The results of these borderline cases will be communicated to the students by the Chair of the Department of English Language and Literature or the Dean.
The Language Doctor is an free online service available every Friday from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm to help current and former ENLUS students if they are experiencing any difficulty with the English language during their time at JCU.
