English Language and Literature Department

Welcome to the Department of English Language and Literature at John Cabot University, an American university in the heart of Rome. Studying English or Creative Writing in Rome offers students the unique opportunity to explore a culture that has influenced writers of literature in English for centuries and to observe English language and literature from within another culture.

The English Language and Literature Department at JCU offers a Major in English Literature, minors in both English Literature and Creative Writing, a wide variety of composition and literature courses in service to the university's general education curriculum, and many courses that students visiting John Cabot University will find useful for transferring back to their home institutions. Courses offered by the department range from introductory courses and surveys of American and English literature to advanced courses focused on individual authors, literary genre, theory, historical periods, and national literatures. The department also offers Creative Writing workshops in fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and the art of literary translation.

Students taking courses in the English Department will find a renowned international faculty with advanced degrees from world-class institutions, including Oxford University, Yale University, Johns Hopkins University, the University of Jordan, and the University of Rome "La Sapienza," among others.

CARLOS DEWS
Carlos Dews is a leading authority on the life and work of American author Carson McCullers. His latest novel is Hush (Negative Capabilities Press, 2020).

     
Shannon Russell  

SHANNON RUSSELL
Shannon Russell specializes in 18th and 19th-century fiction with interests in gender, class, and race, scientific discourse, Victorian technologies, and visual representations in the 19th-century periodical press. She is the Director of the Institute for Creative Writing and Literary Translation.

 

     
Alessandra Grego  

ALESSANDRA GREGO
Alessandra Grego's area of study is myth as a form of narrative, which she has investigated in Victorian Literature and the novel in general, before turning her attention to the role of myth in digital animation and popular culture in the 21st century.

CREATIVE WRITING INSTITUTE

Since its founding in 2009, John Cabot University's Institute for Creative Writing and Literary Translation has become a thriving community of and for writers in Rome. With workshops in the major genres (fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction) and literary translation, the Institute is the place for creative writing students to spend serious time on their writing as they get to know the Eternal City.
