On May 5, Advanced Painting students at John Cabot University, under the guidance of Professor Michele Tocca and in collaboration with z2o Sara Zanin Gallery and the Art and Design Department, organized the exhibition Memory with Her Teeth Out. Held at z2o Sara Zanin Gallery and curated by the students themselves, the exhibition became a unique experience that highlighted artistic vision and collaboration.
"With Memory with Her Teeth Out, I wanted to give students the opportunity to test themselves as artists within a professional exhibition setting," said Michele Tocca, Lecturer in Studio Art at John Cabot University. "Sara Zanin generously welcomed the project and met with the students to discuss what it means to work with a gallery. As part of the Advanced Painting curriculum, students collaboratively conceived and curated the exhibition, developing a shared vision while presenting their individual artistic voices. The high quality of the work on display reflects the strength of the students and the continued growth of the Art and Design Department. For many participants, this exhibition represents an important milestone as they prepare to take the next step in their artistic journeys. It was especially meaningful for me to see students whose development I have followed over several semesters come together in this way. The exhibition was conceived as both a celebration of their achievements and an encouragement for what lies ahead."
Featuring the work of 16 artists, the exhibition showcased a wide range of media, including oil on canvas, watercolor, and acrylic paintings. Despite the diversity of styles, techniques, and visual rhythms, the works came together in a remarkably coherent and emotionally resonant exhibition. One of the most compelling aspects of the show was the way each artist’s distinct voice contributed to a shared atmosphere of memory, nostalgia, and emotional reflection.
The exhibition marked an important transitional moment for many of the participating students. Memory with Her Teeth Out became not only a presentation of artistic practice but also a reflection on the conclusion of their academic journeys at John Cabot University.
Among the participating artists was Karla Santillana, a Spring 2026 graduate with a minor in Art and Design. She shared her insight: “Creative minds will always discover a way to create something greater together. At John Cabot with our amazing Professor Tocca’s Advanced Painting class, we got to experience a student-run art exhibit. Not only did I enjoy seeing my friends’ eclectic work displayed beside mine, but I also loved seeing everyone’s friends and family admiring their work. Getting to create what I consider my best piece, Frank the Rabbit, made this final exhibit as a graduating student even more bittersweet and rewarding. Congratulations to my lovely class and may your brushes always be full of paint and your hands always smell of turpentine.”
The exhibition explored themes closely connected to friendship, growth, emotional vulnerability, and the passage of time. Many of the works reflected on the bittersweet experience of growing up and leaving behind the familiarity of student life and childhood.
The gallery itself became an extension of these themes—a place where personal and collective memories could coexist. As Sara Zanin, owner and founder of z2o Sara Zanin Gallery notes; "Hosting Memory with Her Teeth Out was a valuable opportunity to support a new generation of artists and engage with students at a pivotal stage in their development. I believe it is essential for students to experience how artworks function beyond the classroom and within a professional exhibition context. Witnessing their active involvement in shaping the exhibition—from curatorial discussions to installation—highlighted the importance of learning through direct engagement, experimentation, and collaboration. Projects such as this help bridge the gap between education and professional practice, creating a space where ideas can be tested, challenged, and shared. It was a pleasure to support this process and contribute to the realization of the exhibition."
Beyond showcasing artistic talent, Memory with Her Teeth Out provided students with invaluable hands-on training in organizing and presenting a professional exhibition. From curating the works and designing the exhibition layout to collaborating with a gallery space and engaging with the public, the project immersed students in the realities of the contemporary art world. Opportunities like these bridge the gap between classroom learning and professional practice, equipping emerging artists with the confidence, skills, and insight necessary for their future careers.
