English Language and Literature Department
Welcome to the Department of English Language and Literature at John Cabot University,
an American university in the heart of Rome. Studying English or Creative Writing
in Rome offers students the unique opportunity to explore a culture that has influenced
writers of literature in English for centuries and to observe English language and
literature from within another culture. The English Language and Literature Department
at JCU offers a Major in English literature, minors in both English literature and
Creative Writing, a wide variety of composition and literature courses in service
to the university's general education curriculum, and many courses that students visiting
John Cabot University will find useful for transferring back to their home institutions.
Courses offered by the department range from introductory courses and surveys of American
and English literature to advanced courses focused on individual authors, literary
genre, theory, historical periods, and national literatures. The department also offers
Creative Writing workshops in fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and the art of literary
translation.
Students taking courses in the English Department will find a renowned international
faculty with advanced degrees from world-class institutions, including Oxford University,
Yale University, Johns Hopkins University, the University of Jordan, and the University
of Rome "La Sapienza," among others. The Department of English is also the home to
the university's English Language for University Study (ENLUS) Program that prepares
non-native English speakers to succeed in academic work and the Writing Center that
helps students from across the university to improve their writing skills.
