Professor Campbell, who has been teaching at JCU since 2015, hails from the Golden State of California, where she was born and raised in Los Angeles. She grew up skiing the Sierra Nevadas and camping in Yosemite. After taking an undergraduate course in classical mythology and ancient history, she was hooked on the ancient Mediterranean world and pursued her Bachelor’s degree in ancient history, graduating from the University of Missouri in Kansas City in 1999 cum laude. She went on to finish her Master’s degree in Classics at the University of Kansas in 2005, during which time she was the Assistant to the Editor of the "Memoirs of the American Academy in Rome" and also studied archaeology at the American Academy in Rome (2003). Professor Campbell spent various summers traveling with The State University of New York (SUNY) Brockport on mythological study tours throughout Greece.
Professor Campbell’s research interests include gender and sexuality in the ancient Mediterranean world, folklore and fairytale, and Greek and Roman epic poetry. In addition to her work at JCU, she is a communications consultant at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and at the World Health Organization (WHO), where she works as an editor of various publications.
Professor Campbell teaches courses in English Composition at JCU at all levels. Her courses foster a workshop-oriented atmosphere, where students strengthen their writing by participating in weekly peer review. She draws on a variety of texts, both contemporary and historical, including poetry, prose, and podcasts, to engage students in wrestling with contemporary issues such as sexism, racism, and fascism by examining them through a historical lens.
