Minor in Art and Design

Overview

Art and Design is an inherently interdisciplinary field that encompasses all aspects of creative practice, from conception to production. It is firmly anchored in theoretical and methodological approaches, and it is inherently experimental and socially engaged.

The Minor in Art and Design develops visual thinking and aesthetic awareness; as well as abilities for innovative decision-making, problem-solving, and project management.

  • It enriches majors in History, International Affairs, Marketing, and Psychology, as well as those interested in Entrepreneurship, by deepening engagement with imaginative thinking, decision-making, and problem-solving, as well as developing abilities for creative production and aesthetic appreciation – ideal for careers in international institutions, NGOs, marketing and new media.
  • It complements majors in Art History, Communication, Creative Writing, Classical Studies, English Literature, Humanistic Studies, and Philosophy by providing a firm understanding of art practice, visual and critical thinking, and the interdisciplinary of intellectual and technical creativity – ideal for careers in journalism, visual and social media, publishing, research, and art and cultural heritage Management.
  • It adds to majors in Business Administration, International Business, Economics and Finance, Italian Studies, and Political Science by developing skills of project development (from conception to execution), as well as an understanding of experimentation as development strategy. It develops abilities for exchange of ideas and for creative solution strategies fundamental for leadership roles.
  • Ability to engage in creative practice; ability to use diverse media for effective visual and creative production
  • Ability to engage in imaginative, visual and critical thinking; ability for creative decision-making and problem-solving; development of aesthetic appreciation
  • Ability to evaluate contemporary creative practices, and an understanding of traditions and methodologies of art making
  • Ability for project development from conception to execution; understanding of experimentation as development strategy; ability for resilience, concentration, perseverance and humility as a work ethic

REQUIREMENTS

  • Six courses:

a. at least five with the prefix AS
b. a maximum of one with the prefix AH or DMA

  • One course in Drawing
  • A minimum of one course must be a 300-level or higher AS course

The minor should seek to chart a coherent path through the field of Art and Design. It should seek to engage either with the breadth of the academic field or with an 'area concentration' in a particular medium.

It is recommended that the student consults with Faculty Advisors in the Department of Art and Design for guidance on direction, content and opportunities of the minor.

General requirements for all minors

  • No more than one grade of lower than a C- will be accepted in courses applying to the minor.
  • In the case of multiple minors, no course may apply to more than one minor.
  • No more than three classes may apply to both the major and minor.
  • At least four courses must be taken in residence at John Cabot.
  • Requirements for the minor must be completed by the time of graduation.
