Depending on your passport, you may or may not need to request a short-stay student visa in order to enroll for summer sessions at JCU. Please check your visa requirement on the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ website.
If you hold a passport from a European Union country, you do not need to request a visa to study to enter Italy.
If you hold a passport from a country that is part of the Visa Waiver Program with Italy, you do not need to request a visa to study at JCU. You might need to register your presence in Italy by filing a Declaration of Presence with local authorities.
The Declaration of Presence is the local immigration requirement for stays in Italy of less than 90 days during the summer sessions: it is mandatory for all non-European students (US and International) who enter Italy with a flight from another Schengen country, and do not receive a stamp on their passport at customs in an Italian airport. Our staff will check your passport during Orientation and inform you on the next steps.
If your country is not part of the Visa Waiver program with Italy, you must apply for a short-stay study visa to legally enter Italy. Once you are accepted at JCU, the Admissions Office will provide the information and documents you need to apply for the visa.
If you need to apply for a visa, you must request it at the Italian Consulate with jurisdiction over your home state or city before you come to Italy. It is your responsibility to start the process, so make sure you do it as soon as possible, as the visa may take up to two months or longer to obtain.
Once you have obtained your visa, you might need to declare your presence to the local authorities by filing a Declaration of Presence.
If you are planning to continue your studies at John Cabot University after your summer session classes, you will need to inform the JCU Admissions and Immigration Offices. By law, you are required to obtain a long-term visa if you are planning on studying in Italy for more than 90 days.
