The John Cabot University community is deeply saddened to announce the passing of the Honorable Frank J. Guarini, Chair Emeritus of the JCU Board of Trustees, on June 20, 2026.

One of the University’s most generous benefactors, the Hon. Guarini was born in 1924 in Jersey City, New Jersey. His life was defined by an unwavering dedication to public service, education, and civic engagement. His distinguished academic career included degrees from Dartmouth College, Columbia University, and New York University School of Law, as well as advanced studies at The Hague Academy of International Law in the Netherlands.

Guarini served with distinction during World War II, earning the Navy Commendation Medal and three Battle Stars for his bravery. Following his military service, he embarked on a successful career in law and politics, serving two terms in the New Jersey State Senate and seven terms in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Throughout his career in both public and private life, he maintained a deep commitment to education. In addition to his contributions to JCU, he established centers and institutes at Dartmouth College, New York University School of Law, St. Peter’s University, and New Jersey City University. He was also a passionate advocate for Italian language and culture in the United States and served as President and Chair of the National Italian American Foundation (NIAF).

Guarini’s influence on John Cabot University has been profound, with his philanthropy and vision driving significant growth and development. After joining the JCU Board of Trustees in 1995, he served as Chair for many years and played a pivotal role in shaping the University’s future. In 2005, he established the Guarini Institute for Public Affairs, which organizes lectures, seminars, and other public events aimed at fostering greater understanding of the key issues and challenges facing the world today.

In 2008, the University honored him by naming its historic Via della Lungara building the Frank J. Guarini Campus. His generosity continued to transform the institution through a $1 million pledge in 2014 that established the Columbus Guarini Scholarship, a $3 million gift in 2018 to renovate the Caroline Critelli Guarini Campus, and a $2.5 million donation that led to the creation of the Frank J. Guarini School of Business, which achieved the prestigious AACSB accreditation in 2022. John Cabot University’s MA in International Affairs, launched in the Fall 2024 semester, was also made possible through Guarini’s generous support.

Guarini’s legacy at JCU extends far beyond bricks and mortar. His commitment to education and cultural enrichment has strengthened the University’s academic and intellectual life. The Guarini Institute for Public Affairs has become an important venue in Rome for discussions on transatlantic and global issues, while his recent $500,000 gift to establish the Frank J. Guarini Art Center further reflects his dedication to fostering a vibrant academic environment.

During Guarini’s 100th birthday celebration on August 20, 2024, JCU Board Chair Salvatore Salibello presented him with a gold medal in recognition of his extraordinary service and visionary leadership. His enduring impact on John Cabot University and the broader educational community stands as a testament to a life devoted to public service, learning, and the advancement of society.

JCU President Franco Pavoncello reflected on Guarini’s passing, stating, “The world has lost a giant, and JCU has lost one of its greatest pillars. Frank Guarini was a man of outstanding humanity and grace combined with a brilliant mind and a unique ability in identifying problems and their solutions.  He loved JCU, and he will always remain in our hearts. May he rest in peace.”
