On March 27, 2026, JCU students had the unique opportunity to step inside the world of space engineering during a visit to Thales Alenia Space in Rome, a leading European manufacturer of satellites and space systems.

Guided by Assembly, Integration and Test Manager Nicola Saggini, students were introduced to every stage of a satellite’s lifecycle, from initial design and integration to final testing. The visit offered a rare, behind-the-scenes look at processes that are typically closed to the public.

One of the highlights was exploring specialized facilities, including the vacuum chamber and acoustic testing rooms. These environments simulate the extreme conditions of space and launch, ensuring that satellites can withstand intense pressure, vibration, and temperature variations while operating reliably in orbit.

Throughout the visit, students gained valuable insight into the rigorous quality control standards that define the aerospace industry. Precision, attention to detail, and strict verification processes are essential at every stage, where even the smallest component plays a critical role in mission success.

The group was joined by Riccardo Sarra, a JCU alumnus who recently began his internship at Thales Alenia Space.

JCU student Miriam Barzaghi reflected on the visit: “Our time at Thales Alenia Space was truly eye-opening and inspiring. I learned so much more about how satellites are created and prepared for launch. What impressed me the most was the importance of collaboration is in this industry: no single company can achieve something like this alone. It takes a wide network of partners and suppliers to bring a satellite from concept to launch. This experience truly highlighted the power of teamwork on a global scale.”

Student Leonardo Serio was also impressed: "Visiting Thales Alenia Space’s headquarters far exceeded my expectations. I felt immersed in a high-level think tank of brilliant engineers using the most advanced technologies currently driving European innovation in the space economy."

The JCU Center for Career Services continues to create opportunities like this, helping students connect with industries, professionals, and real-world career paths.
