Sustainability Careers: Expert Talk with Dragana Stojkovich

As part of its ongoing commitment to sustainability, John Cabot University creates opportunities for students to engage with global challenges at the intersection of environmental responsibility and professional growth. JCU’s Center for Career Services is particularly dedicated to organizing events that connect students with career paths focused on sustainability-related matters.

On October 16, students had the chance to hear from Dragana Stojkovich, sustainability and environment manager at dnata Travel Group in Dubai, the holding group for Emirates Airlines, in a talk on careers in sustainability. Stojkovich shared insights into her role at dnata. She specializes in emissions reduction, responsible consumption, and animal welfare. Her work involves implementing sustainability initiatives across different departments, highlighting the importance of cross-functional teamwork for a successful job.

“Ten years ago, the sustainability function in a company was not mainstream; it was a nice-to-have. Now, it is a must,” said Stojkovich. She emphasized the growing opportunities in sustainability, which are expanding at 8% a year worldwide. “There is a market for sustainability jobs no matter what your background is, from marketing to engineering, to corporate social responsibility.”

Stojkovich then shared her top career tips with the students. She urged them to be open-minded and always ready to explore unconventional paths, especially early in one’s career. “Find your niche as you progress, and be a continuous learner,” she said. “Sustainability is evolving quickly, so staying up to date is essential.” She also invited students to be team players, as collaboration across departments is crucial, and to always seek and nurture mentors who can support personal and professional growth.

Dragana Stojkovich holds advanced degrees in Biology and Ecology, Forestry and Environmental Sciences, and Agricultural Development, and has experience in the private sector, the UN, and academia.
