Bio

Born in Rome and raised between Rome and San Diego (CA), Professor Mattia Maglione holds a double B.A. in Communications and English Literature, and an M.Phil. in Children’s Literature from Trinity College, Dublin. Professor Maglione, who in his PhD explores literary space in relation to Carroll, Borges and Calvino, is researching in the field of Literary Theory studies.

He teaches primarily at John Cabot University, the American University of Rome, and the University of Rome, Tor Vergata.

Research Interests

Professor Maglione’s main research interests are children’s literature and fairy tales, literary and cultural theory, and jazz music. He has dedicated specific attention to Lewis Carroll’s Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865) and Sylvie and Bruno (1889) while at Trinity College, where he worked on the concepts of space and its production in the aforementioned novels. He has also explored the topics of food, material culture and consumption in the "Golden Age" of children's literature (1865-1926), with specific attention to the role of objects in late Victorian literature. In addition to Lewis Carroll, Professor Maglione has also written on Edward Lear, Italo Calvino, Jorge Luis Borges, Georges Perec, and philosopher Roland Barthes.

Professor Maglione is also a translator. For Mattioli, he has translated Charles Dickens's The Adventures of Oliver Twist (2023) and Martin Chuzzlewit (2025), and has written the glossary section of Italian translations of Dickens's The Pickwick Papers (2022), Nicholas Nickleby (2024), and Barnaby Rudge (2025). Other translations are forthcoming.

Courses Taught

Professor Maglione has been teaching at John Cabot University since 2021. His are taught in the form of seminars and open discussion sessions, with the goal of encouraging critical thinking and argumentation. At John Cabot University, he teaches academic writing courses and public speaking. He has also taught research methods for humanities and social science, literary theory and children's literature.
