Professor Thaïs Gendry, who joined JCU in 2026, holds a PhD in History from the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS) and the University of Geneva. She was a postdoctoral fellow at the Scuola Superiore Meridionale in Naples from 2022 to 2025. She has taught European, African, and colonial history at universities in France, Italy, Argentina, and Switzerland.
Her research focuses on colonial Africa and legal history, particularly French West Africa. She works on colonial penal institutions, punishment, state violence, and criminology. Her research on the death penalty, soon to be published as a book, examines the use of penal sanctions and judicial institutions in the construction of colonial societies. Her current work explores colonial courts’ treatment of gender-based violence.
