Rä di Martino is a visual artist and filmmaker who has been teaching at JCU since 2021. Her work delves into the interplay between reality and fiction, often highlighting the absurdity inherent in their representation. Working across film, video installation, photography, and archival research, she employs actors and props to dissect subjects ranging from human relationships and cinematographic traditions to the theater of war and the fabrication of history.
Professor di Martino studied at Chelsea College of Art and the Slade School of Art in London, earning an MFA before relocating to New York from 2005 to 2010. Her films and video installations have been showcased internationally at institutions such as Tate Modern (London), MoMA PS1 (New York), Palazzo Grassi (Venice), GAM and Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo (Turin), MACRO and MAXXI (Rome), Museion (Bolzano), MCA (Chicago), and Magasin (Grenoble). She has also participated in numerous film festivals, including the Locarno Film Festival, VIPER Basel, Transmediale.04, New York Underground Film Festival, Kasseler Dokfest, Torino Film Festival, and the Venice Film Festival, where she won the SIAE Award and Gillo Pontecorvo Award in 2014.
Her recent exhibitions include 'Kant Can't Can-Can' at Fondazione Giuliani, Roma (Italy, 2025), ‘Electric Whispers’ at Beirut Arts Center and Fotografia Europea, Reggio Emilia (Lebanon, Italy, 2025) 'PLAY IT AGAIN' at Forte Belvedere - Museo Novecento, Florence (Italy, 2023), 'Premio Acacia' at Museo Del 900, Milan (Italy 2020). Professor Di Martino is currently developing her second feature film.
