Emanuele Sommario is presently Associate Professor of International Law at the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna of Pisa (Italy). Since 2018 he has been the Director of the Scuola's Master in Human Rights and Conflict Management. He joined JCU in 2025.
He holds a Ph.D. in International Law from the Scuola Sant’Anna, an L.L.M. in Public International Law from the University of Nottingham (UK) and a Degree in Political Science from the University of Pisa (all awarded with honors). He has been Excellence Fellow at the International Law Department of the University of Geneva, Visiting Fellow at the British Institute of International and Comparative Law in London, and Visiting Fellow at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva.
His main interests lay in Human Rights Law, International Humanitarian Law, the International Law on the use of force, Collective Security Law and International Disaster Law, and he is the author of several scholarly works on the above topics, which he teaches at undergraduate and graduate level. Between 2013 and 2016 he has been unit coordinator of the International Disaster Law Project, a joint research endeavour financed by the Italian Ministry for University and Research. Between September 2020 and September 2023 he has been the coordinator of a Jean Monnet Module on European and International Human Rights Standards in Disaster Settings. Since October 2023, he has held the Jean Monnet Chair in European and International Human Rights Standards in Conflicts and Disasters. Since November 2023 he has also been the Principal Investigator for the PRIN 2022 (Projects of Relevant National Interest) study on Health Emergencies and Legal Preparedness, managed with the University of Bologna.
He is a member of the Italian Society of International and EU Law, of the International Law Association (ILA) and of the International Institute of Humanitarian Law. Between 2022 and 2024 he was also co-rapporteur of the ILA Committee on Human Rights in Times of Emergency. He is the co-editor of the Yearbook of International Disaster Law (Brill) and a member of the Editorial Committee of the and of The Italian Review of International and Comparative Law (Giappichelli).
