Ben Scribner, who has been teaching at JCU since 2014, earned his Ph.D. in Communications from Sapienza University of Rome in 2013 with a dissertation titled "Manufacturing Normality in the Israeli Settlements: Web Representations and Facts on the Ground," which examined the relationship between digital narratives and material realities in contested political spaces. His research interests include media and social transformation, the cultural politics of normalization, gender and inequality, and the intersection of communication and globalization. His professional experience spans academic leadership, translation of scholarly works in the social sciences, and engagement with international education programs. In addition to his academic work, Scribner has extensive experience as a freelance translator of scholarly texts from Italian to English, working with faculty at Sapienza University in sociology, political science, and philosophy. His background also includes social activism and program coordination with non-governmental organizations in Italy, the United States, and the Middle East, reflecting a long-standing engagement with global social justice issues. Across his teaching and research, Scribner integrates sociological analysis with a critical understanding of media, identity, and transnational experience.
