Professor Poletto studied Archaeology at the Sapienza University of Rome, where she obtained a Laurea (2015) and a Laurea Magistrale (2016). She then earned a Ph.D. from the University of Oxford (2022), with a dissertation on imperial villas in Italy in the second and third centuries AD. In 2023, she completed the Postgraduate Specialization School (Scuola di Specializzazione) in Archaeological Heritage at La Sapienza.

Professor Poletto is a classical archaeologist. Her research investigates the impact of human activities on the configuration of space, and seeks to use architecture as a tool for a comprehensive study of ancient societies. Her doctoral research considered the architecture, functions, and usage patterns of post-Hadrianic imperial villas in Italy, with the purpose of investigating the extent to which emperors impacted the spatial design of imperial residences. She argued that that the evolution of the role of the emperor and of the duties it involved contributed to shape the configuration of imperial residences, which were increasingly used as fully-fledged centers of government.

Professor Poletto is an active, dedicated, and internationally engaged field archaeologist. She has participated in 18 excavation seasons in 10 different sites in Italy, Kosovo, Morocco, and Turkey, first as an excavator, and subsequently as trench supervisor, topographer, and deputy field director.
