STAND (Students Taking Action Now - Darfur)

STANDBorn out of the fight to stop the genocide in Darfur, Sudan, STAND is devoted to creating a sustainable student network that actively fights genocide wherever it may occur. The mission of the STAND chapter at JCU is to provide individuals with a comprehensive understanding of the nature, limits, and characteristics of genocide.

Our community service program with the Joel Nafuma Refugee Center (JNFC) in Rome has started us in a campaign to raise awareness about the political refugees in Rome and what we can do to help.

How STAND Can Train You:

  • Learn how to fundraise for nonprofits
  • Work on marketing skills for fundraising

Dr. Andrea Lanzone - Advisor

Joel Nafuma Refugee Center

Their mission:

“To accompany and assist asylum seekers from all over the world, regardless of ethnicity, faith tradition, or phase of their journey for protection, integration and resettlement.  By recognizing our common humanity and providing hospitality in the heart of Rome, we aim to provide a support program, and to encourage and empower refugees to build new lives."

Students volunteer their time by helping distribute clothing, blankets, toiletries, food and other necessities to refugees at the Center. STAND volunteers also provide English lessons to refugees.
