Internships

The For-Credit Internship Program at John Cabot University permits students and recent graduates to bridge the distance between the classroom theory and the real world application of knowledge. Students have opportunities for a variety of learning-working situations to enhance their educational experience. John Cabot students can intern at multinational corporations in Rome, with embassies and United Nations agencies, with the media and at cultural institutions.

For-Credit Internships involve either meaningful participation in a project or an ongoing assignment of substance, such as assisting a manager or other professional in his or her work activities. These internships, which are designated by the course number 298, carry three general elective credits and are graded on a Pass/Non-Pass basis by a member of the John Cabot faculty. Internships taken for academic credit do not usually include any stipend. Requirements include: 120-150 hours of work during the semester, a daily journal, a written report, a written field interview and an Internship provider’s written evaluation of the intern’s performance.

Participation requirements For-Credit: Student interns must have at least junior standing (i.e. have earned at least 60 credits toward graduation), a JCU cumulative grade point average of at least 3.00 or a grade point average of at least 3.00 for the most recent 30 credits taken during regular academic semesters (excluding summer sessions), a valid Permesso di Soggiorno (Permit to Stay), and an Italian Codice Fiscale number.

Not-For-Credit Internships are open to full-time students, degree-seeking or visiting, and to recent John Cabot graduates. These internships may require either part- or full-time unremunerated work over a period from three to six months. The intern-trainee is supervised only by on-site supervisors and although the internship carries no academic credit it is a valuable professional experience that is highly recommended.

Participation requirements Not-For-Credit: Those of a JCU cumulative grade point average of at least 2.80 or a grade point average of at least 2.80 for the most recent 30 credits taken during regular academic semesters. They must also fulfill the prerequisites of the organisations offering the internships themselves, and a demonstrable commitment to the internship; a valid Permesso di Soggiorno (Permit to Stay), and an Italian Codice Fiscale number.

All participants are normally required to be fluent in both English and Italian.

To the extent possible, the University assists in the placement of qualified students in both for-credit and not-for-credit internships. While every effort is made to place students for the semester desired, students are advised to apply at least one, if not two terms in advance, due to limited availability of placements and possible security clearance requirements of the sponsor.
