Graduate School

Going to graduate school is an important decision that involves serious considerations about long-term professional and personal objectives. The Career Services Team works closely with Department Chairs and Faculty to help students throughout this process, from the initial decision to explore the possibility of an academic career, to the selection of appropriate schools, preparation of personal statements, writing samples and the application itself.

General Advice

The best first point of reference is usually one or more trusted professors in the chosen field, but the Career Services Team and your academic advisor are available throughout the academic year alongside the professor to provide additional support.

Mentoring

Students may ask to be paired up with a “mentor”, a John Cabot graduate who is already conducting post-graduate studies in the student’s chosen field, and who can provide first-hand information and practical advice.

Post-graduate Workshops

Every semester the Career Services Center sponsors workshops on how to apply to graduate school and how to survive graduate school, where students can ask any questions they may have to a panel of academics.

Speakers

Throughout the academic year the Career Services Center invites representatives of various graduate schools and a variety of post-graduate programs to present their programs to interested students.

Writing the personal statement

The Career Services Team is available throughout the academic year alongside the professors to provide additional support in the writing of the personal statement.

“Dichiarazione di valore” for Italian universities

Italian universities require a “Dichiarazione di valore,” i.e. a detailed account of the courses taken by the student at undergraduate level that enables them to determine whether the student has acquired all the basic knowledge required to start a post-graduate program at the same level as students coming from an Italian university. The process is not dissimilar to the activity carried out by the Registrars to determine how many credits a transfer student may apply to his or her program. JCU’s Registrar’s Office assists students in this process.
