Performing Arts at JCU
- The JCU Theater Group: Both study abroad and degree-seeking student actors, singers and dancers are welcome! You can also help with music, scenery, stage management, technical assistance or make-up. This collective effort culminates in lively and colorful productions put on for the JCU community and the public every semester. For further information on this group and how to participate, email theater@johncabot.edu.
- The John Cabot Chamber Orchestra: Open to both amateurs and professional musicians, this group performs in many prestigious locations in and around Rome. For information visit www.jcco.it.
- Belly Dancing: One of the most popular extra-curricular classes among women at JCU, Beginner and Advanced-Beginner lessons are offered every semester by a qualified instructor and experienced dancer. The beautiful ancient art is explored through its basic movements as well as choreography, while a historical overview is provided to gain a better insight into this complex yet simple, antique yet contemporary dance form. Styles studied include Egyptian and Turkish traditional, cabaret and gypsy dance, as well as tribal fusion belly dance. In Advanced Beginner classes, use of veils and zills (finger cymbals) is also introduced.
All levels are welcome and most have no previous experience at all, nevertheless culminating in a Hafla at the end of the semester. The event – very well attended every semester – gives dancers the opportunity to showcase the skills and grace they have learned throughout the term. A general belly dance “party” open to all, the Hafla also features choreography at different levels performed by the semester’s dance students for an audience of JCU students, faculty, staff and friends and much fun is had by all.
Revel in the power of belly dance and get involved in the community of dancers at JCU!
For more information on how to get involved you can email our instructor Kathryne at kfedele@johncabot.edu.
