Residential Life

Resident Assistants
Acting as student extensions of the Housing Office, Resident Assistants (RAs) are available to all students living in JCU Housing. Each RA is assigned to a specific area within the JCU Housing circuit. One of the main functions of an RA is to help you acclimate to your new neighborhood. They also organize group activities so you can get to know other JCU students in your area, since other students often live nearby. Your RA is also available as a resource to help you refer your questions to the appropriate offices, access the online resources JCU has to offer, and to make sure your housing questions are answered.

Make sure you don’t miss your RA’s neighborhood tour, which normally takes place the first weekend or first week of classes!

Roommate Requests
You are welcome to provide us with the names of other students you would like to live with using the allotted space on the Housing Request Form (HRF). Please remember that roommate requests must be made by both parties - you as well as the person you would like to live with – in order to be considered. If you forgot to list a name on the HRF, you can follow-up with an email to the Housing Office at housing@johncabot.edu and we will do our best to accommodate your request.* You may also use this field to express other preferences, such as if you would like to live with someone from a different university.
(*) Note: JCU Housed students cannot request students from Study Abroad Italy or Academic Programs International as roommates.

When you arrive, you will find that you are NOT assigned to a specific room (unless you have been granted a single upgrade, in which case your name will be on the door), but only to an apartment. Feel free to choose your room on a first-come first-served basis.

Join Our Facebook Group!
Before the beginning of each session, an invitation to the JCU Housing Facebook Group for your session will be sent via email. This is an invite-only group meant to provide a private space for all JCU-housed students to meet each other, create a network of contacts before arriving, and even find potential roommates. The Resident Assistants are also members of the Facebook group and can provide you with useful pre-arrival information and answer questions you may have.

Resident Agreements
During your first meeting with your RA, you and your roommates will be required to fill out a Resident Agreement. This set of guidelines has been established to help you and your roommates clarify certain issues to help prevent misunderstandings. The Resident Agreement functions in conjunction with - not in place of - the pre-established Housing Roles and Policies. The agreement will ask you all to discuss things like cleaning schedules, use of others belongings and more. You and your roommates will be asked to sign a copy of the agreement to keep, and to sign a copy to be left with your RA. This document will be one of the first things your RA will consult if any difficulties among you and your roommates arise. A copy of the Resident Agreement is available to current students under the Housing Section of MyJCU (JCU login required).

For more tips on getting along with your roommates, please see page 26 of our Roman Housing Booklet.

Good Neighbor Award
The purpose of the Good Neighbor Award is to recognize those students who exemplify a holistic JCU Housing experience. This includes demonstrated responsibility and respect for the property left in their care, a commitment to respect each other as roommates and adults, and their assimilation into the Roman lifestyle by maintaining positive neighbor relations.*

Students residing in shared apartments outside the Gianicolo Residence have significantly more contact with their local community. Therefore, they are expected to be accountable for the proper upkeep of their apartment and to respect the diverse laws and cultural norms of their host country.

In the past, winners of the Good Neighbor Award have received the use of a free apartment in Barcelona or on the island of Ischia.**

The Good Neighbor Award is possible thanks to the generosity of one of our housing providers, the B&B Network.

* The Good Neighbor Award is available each Fall and Spring semester, though not always awarded as it is entirely merit-based.
** The Housing Office notifies award winners of which award option is available to them for their session; awards vary.
