All JCU housing options are standardized in terms of basic amenities, as outlined in our Roman Housing Booklet. Students must understand that University housing is Italian by nature in every way, and aesthetics may vary; this includes but it is not limited to: structure, layout, surroundings, utilities, furnishings, and neighbors.
Wireless Internet, though available free-of-charge in all apartments but is not included as a basic standard amenity since local internet providers can be unreliable. The University does not accept any liability for problems with local providers and will not intervene in internet maintenance. For academic research, students should utilize the wireless internet service available on both campuses.
OPTION A: RESIDENCE GIANICOLO
The Gianicolo Residence is home to a series of apartment-style student residences in Rome’s Trastevere neighborhood. This learning and living community is just steps away from the Guarini campus and a short walk to the Tiber Campus Student Center and its dining services. Apartments house between two and eight students and include a kitchen, bathroom(s) and a common living space. Apartments are assigned to interested students by way of a lottery system. The building offers 24/7 security, a regular cleaning service, internet connection, and air conditioning. The Gianicolo Residence is home to the JCU Housing & Residence Life Office and houses Resident Assistants (RAs) throughout the building.
OPTION B: INDEPENDENT APARTMENTS
Students may also choose to be housed in independent apartments. Apartments are located throughout the city, within a 30 minute walk or bus ride to JCU, in buildings shared with Italian neighbors and integrated into Roman neighborhoods. This is a true immersion experience. Apartments offer standard amenities (a kitchen, 1-2 bathrooms depending on the number of residents, and a small common area) and house 4 to 6 students in double bedrooms. It is important to specify that in Italy, “the common area” may not denote a special room (like a living room), but additional seating space in the kitchen. While all apartments offer the same amenities, students will find that no two independent apartments are alike. More information about typical independent apartments can be found in the Roman Housing Booklet
OPTION C: RESIDENCE HOTEL "MEDAGLE D'ORO" (Includes four-month bus/metro pass - a €120 value!)
(currently not available for Fall 2010)
This residence hotel is located in the Vatican area, and is about a 45 minute walk or bus ride to the JCU campus. It offers living units very similar to a U.S. college suite style dorm. Typically there are double bedrooms with two or more making up a suite. Suites have their own kitchen and bathroom and usually have a common living area. Amenities include 24-hour security and a doorman, regular cleaning service, linen changes and on-site maintenance support. Though the furthest option from JCU, this residence is located minutes away from Metro line A Cipro stop, with direct service to areas like: Piazza del Popolo (where you can catch movies in English), Piazza del Spagna (close to the Anglo American Bookstore), the Hard Rock Café, the US Embassy, and Termini Station (Rome’s main station). The Medaglie d'oro website has more information about the hotel and the area.
