Health Assistance
Before coming to JCU, students are required to complete and return the Health Assistance Form.
The health and safety of our students is of utmost importance to JCU. The University encourages all students to contact staff when they need assistance in this area. A JCU Administrator always has the JCU Emergency Phone 24/7 (to be called only in real emergencies). The Student Services Office maintains a roster of English-speaking physicians and counselors in Rome qualified to assist our students at all times and makes referrals, but assumes no responsibility for these medical referrals.
A Student Services staff member is available to assist you if you need to call a doctor from 9:00am to 5:00pm. For more information email studentservices@johncabot.edu.
Here below is more information about:
Health Insurance Italian law requires that all non-Italian students living in Italy have medical insurance, either through an Italian or a foreign insurance company. Platform3000 will assist you in obtaining a Health Insurance for your time abroad.
By Italian law, emergency medical treatment will be provided to Italian nationals and foreign nationals alike. Any treatment received in Italian Emergency Rooms is subject to a medical fee. Policies on public hospital charges vary from region to region.
Private clinics accept patients covered by private insurance plans, but insurance clauses should be verified in advance.
Before finalizing your decision to purchase any form of additional coverage, please familiarize yourself with the following sections.
Doctors Visits Student Services can assist you in making an appointment with an English-speaking doctor. Doctors do not accept overseas payments from insurance companies and students will be asked to pay up-front for the visit. Doctors will provide students with receipts/invoices in order to be reimbursed by their insurance company back home.
Medication It is unlawful to have medication mailed to you and it will be stopped at customs. Students should bring enough of their prescription medication with them to last their entire stay in Rome (this is also true for contact lenses, favorite over-the-counter cold and allergy medicines and vitamins). American prescriptions will not be honored here. If you need a prescription while abroad, you will have to see an Italian doctor and have a new prescription written (make sure that your doctor at home will list the generic name of the medicines). You will also be asked to pay the full market price and be reimbursed by your insurance company later. Also, not all medications are available i.e. ADD and ADHD medications.

Medical Treatment If you require continued medical treatment during your stay in Rome, please notify the University ahead of time to better assist you. Please contact studentservices@johncabot.edu.
JCU Emergency Phone
The JCU staff member answering the Emergency Phone will make every possible effort to assist you or refer you to the proper persona, agency or service. The JCU Emergency phone is not an "emergency response team" and in emergency situations (serious illness, fire, theft, etc.) students should first call Italian emergency services listed on the JCU Emergency Card handed out during Orientation.
All non-emergency medical issues should be brought to the attention of Student Services staff during normal business hours (generally 9-5).
The Emergency Phone should only be called in a true emergency. Students are expected to exercise discretion to distinguish between an inconvenience that can be remedied by themselves and a real emergency requiring immediate assistance. Misuse of the Emergency Phone can result in fines charged to your student account in addition to charges incurred by JCU in responding to any 'false alarm'.
Counseling Services JCU employs two counselors, both psychologists, to assist students with emotional problems that could interfere with their well-being or academic performance. |
