US Embassy Summer 2008

The intern will help with the Detention and Removals program. The U.S. Embassy is in the process of launching a new removals database called the Detention and Removals Overseas Information Database or “DROID,” which will be used to capture statistical information on deportations and transits through Europe, Africa and the Middle East. Since the database became functional in March, the Embassy is getting all of its statistical information in the system since the beginning of the fiscal year. An intern will be a great asset in helping to get this information into the database. The intern can also assist with preparing removal notices to the Polizia di Frontiera. Fluency in the English language is a must. A working knowledge of Italian is beneficial but not required. The intern is needed ASAP.

The internship entails translating, researching news stories, assisting bureau activities such as photocopying, carrying equipment, and making tape dubs.

Ideally, the intern would work several hours (from 15 to 30 a week) during the day almost everyday and speak fluent Italian and English.

VOLUNTEERING AT FAO

Volunteer for Journal of Food Composition and Analysis


Under the supervision of the Editor and Managing Editor of the Journal of Food Composition and Analysis (AGNA), the volunteer will:

•Provide assistance with editorial processes for the Journal of Food Composition and Analysis (JFCA) including help with peer review selection;
•Prepare press releases for the FAO Agriculture Department website related to activities in nutrition, including food composition, biodiversity, food security, JFCA research papers, and other newsworthy topics;
•Select reviewers using scientific abstract databases (Science Direct, Scopus and the D. Lubin online abstract sources), and follow up the review process;
•Contact FAO officers to help prepare upcoming special issues of JFCA;
•Research JFCA cover artwork in the rare book collection of the D. Lubin Library, in conjunction with the library personnel;
•Assist with routine office correspondence, especially with authors and reviewers;
•Assist in maintaining the online Elsevier Editorial Service reviewer database with current email addresses, which includes sorting the reject emails in the JFCA Outlook Inbox and searching for up-to-date information using Internet search engines;
•Any other editorial assistance in the office of JFCA.

Qualifications:
Excellent computer skills; knowledge of software products Word, Access, Excel, Adobe Acrobat, and keyboard skills; interest in conducting research using online databases; excellent English language competency; good English writing skills.

Duration: Maximum 6 months.

VOLUNTEERING AT FAO


Under the general direction of Mrs. Jane Wu, Chief, David Lubin Memorial Library, the volunteer will:

1.    Identify and document a subset of the archival works in the David Lubin Memorial Library collections.

2.    Identify and prioritize appropriate works for digitization and display.

3.    Digitize and document the highest priority items

4.    Identify and document publications suitable for digitization or display in a number of languages but mostly English and Italian.

5.    Assist with organizing the schedule of exhibits and displays in the David Lubin Memorial Library.

Editorial Internship at WHERE Rome

WHERE Rome is a monthly city guide-magazine for English-speaking visitors. It has a 40,000-copy circulation and is distributed free-of-charge at 4-5 star hotels.

The editorial intern at WHERE will participate is every step of magazine production from editorial planning to the final cuts and corrections before it goes to print. You will be asked to research, edit, write, and translate*. Writing assignments will vary according to ability and necessity. Interns are also encouraged to provide digital photos, some of which may be published with a credit.

The ideal candidate is an outgoing and dynamic team-worker with an editor’s eye and a creative flair.

Internship duration: 2 months from starting date with possibility of extension to a total of 3 months.

Weekly commitment: 4 hours, 3 days a week (preferably 12-4pm but we’re flexible)

The internship is unpaid, however, we will gladly provide a letter of reference and see that you receive a copy of the magazine with your contributions for clips.

*An intermediate level of Italian is required for short translations (ad copy, press releases, etc.)

Role and Responsibilities:  Interns at Civitella are invited to work for a minimum of six weeks during the period of May-through October.  Our interns are involved in all aspects of a residency program in the arts from doing errands, assisting Fellows (visual artists, writers, and musical composers) in their work, preparing for events, cleaning up after events, giving orientation information, shelving books in the library, organizing the CD, video and DVD collection, inventory, framing and installing works of art, general assistance to the Director and to the Fellows’ Coordinator as well as to the Office Manager.

Skills and Requirements:  Working knowledge of English and Italian is mandatory, as is a valid driver’s license and an international driver’s license.  Interns must be able to drive a standard stick shift vehicle.  We prefer interns who are at 21 to 25 years of age and who have advanced computer skills, some experience in the arts, in study or work abroad, and who are self motivated, independent, and able to deal with an intensely motivated community in an idyllic but somewhat isolated place of work.

Compensation:  The internship awards are competitive.  We offer the selected candidates roundtrip airfare/transportation (from place of residence to Civitella), lodging and meals for the period of stay, and a stipend of 400 euro per month of interning.
