The Orange Revolution and Democratic change in Ukraine
by Nicole Shantz

To stimulate interest among university students in the historic Orange Revolution in Ukraine, the Shevchenko Scientific Society in NYC sponsored an essay contest. The best essay, as judged by three scholars, was that submitted by Nicole Shantz, a student of John Cabot University in Rome, Italy, who wrote it under the supervision of professors Federigo Argentieri and Lawrence Gray. Alumni Celebrations 2007

The John Cabot University Alumni Holiday Celebrations in Rome and New York City have become traditional events that many look forward to each year.

The Rome Holiday Aperitivo took place last December 15th at Le Bain, a trendy restaurant right in the center of Rome, just a short walk from Largo Argentina and Piazza Venezia. Alumni, both recent and not so recent, Faculty and Staff mingled over drinks and food and caught up on JCU news as well as personal achievements.

President Pavoncello introduced Mary Merva in her new position as Dean to many alumni whom she had taught in the past and made a celebratory holiday toast.

Just a week later, Alumni Coordinator Carmen Scarpati met with JCU Alumni and members of Faculty and Staff at Fabio’s Piccolo Fiore in New York City for the Annual Holiday Dinner. Alumni from all over the US joined together for a lovely Italian dinner and exchanged pictures, news, and lots of food!

Rebecca Totti (neè Filios), class of 2005 and Business Administration flew from Los Angeles to attend the event. Currently owner of an Italian restaurant together with her Roman husband, Rebecca has fond memories of her days at John Cabot University. She recalled the “heartwarming feeling of the country (Italy) and friends throughout JCU.”

Ismet Saiti, Business Administration graduate of 2000, now Financial Advisor of AXA Financial in NYC, is originally from Montenegro. Now married and expecting his first child. In his words, JCU was “overall, the best experience in my life – I would do it all over again.”

Study Abroad students also took advantage of the opportunity to join former classmates and Faculty at this event. Andrew Rocco, a visiting student in 2002 has only words of praise for John Cabot University. He states that it was the “most rewarding experience – I found my long lost roots, my family. It also gave me the opportunity to meet students from all over the US.” Andrew is currently a Social Studies teacher in a NYC high school.

Alumni gatherings are rewarding experiences for all those involved. If you are a JCU alumni and wish to participate in alumni events, please email the Alumni Association at alumni@johncabot.edu

We look forward to hearing from you!
