The Wales Program
In 2000, John Cabot University established a validation agreement with the University of Wales. Under this agreement, JCU is able to offer Business Administration, International Affairs, Marketing, and Political Science students the opportunity to earn both an American Bachelor of Arts and a British Honours Degree. Students may obtain the following Honours degrees from the University of Wales while studying at John Cabot University:

As part of the validation exercise, a UK examination team visits JCU annually to review participating students’ academic work, the structure and content of JCU courses, and JCU academic procedures and policies. This annual review provides the quality assurance that JCU’s programs maintain the standards of academic excellence expected from a UK university.
Who is eligible to participate in the University of Wales validated programs?
You are eligible if you are proficient in English (for those who have English as a second language this is already satisfied by John Cabot University admissions requirements), have the University of Wales entry requirement of two ‘A’ Levels which is equivalent to one of the following: the International Baccalaureate (IB), Italian maturità, or one year of university study (30 credits) for US high school graduates. Lastly, you must be able to follow the prescribed curriculum of the Wales validated degrees for your last 60 credits of study.
When should I enroll in the Wales program, and will I receive credit for my maturità or for work completed at other institutions?
The John Cabot degree program is a four-year course of study while the University of Wales program is a three-year course of study. Generally, US high school graduates begin the University of Wales validation program after their first year of study at JCU, while Italian and international students who enter JCU with transfer credits from their maturità or IB begin the program in their first year of study at JCU. Students transferring from Italian, international, or American universities have their university credits evaluated by special faculty advisors to determine eligibility. To have your credits evaluated before applying to JCU, please go to the Transfer Credit Evaluation Form. John Cabot will award credit for courses completed in an Italian university provided that the grade received is at least 24/30; for American universities a grade of “C” or higher must be achieved to transfer in credits, and for those coming from international universities, equivalent transfer criteria apply.
Students who have completed the John Cabot University graduation requirements will have earned the 120 US credits required to obtain a degree from the University of Wales.
Is the degree awarded by the University of Wales separate from the John Cabot degree?
Yes, though you must first complete your John Cabot degree in order to receive the Wales validated degree. The degrees are separate and graduation ceremonies take place at different times. JCU graduation occurs in May of each year. The University of Wales graduation takes place every year at Cardiff, in Wales. The University of Wales encourages JCU students to attend the Wales graduation ceremony.
If I enroll at John Cabot University, will I automatically receive the Wales degree?
The Wales degree is not automatic. You must apply to the program and pay a one-time Wales fee (€1950) in order to participate. Once you have done so, you will be assigned a special advisor to make sure you follow the Wales program of study. In addition, JCU faculty will be notified of your participation to help ensure that your written work that is part of the Wales curriculum is kept for review by the Wales examiners when you are ready to graduate.
How are the degree classifications determined and what do they mean?
Each year, an examination team from the University of Wales travels to John Cabot University to examine the work that has been submitted by graduating candidates for courses that are part of the Wales curriculum. Each candidate is assessed by both internal and external examiners on the quality of his/her graded work. At the end of the October meeting, a recommendation is made to the University of Wales, which ultimately decides whether to confer its degree as well as the degree classification earned:
First-Class Honours (First), Upper Second-Class Honours (2:1), Lower Second-Class Honours (2:2), Third-Class Honours (Third or 3rd), and Ordinary degree (Pass).
A First is the highest honours degree awarded; the majority of students receive Seconds (2:1 and 2:2). In the British higher educational system, candidates for postgraduate study are usually required to have at least a 2:2 degree, although candidates with 2:1s are in a considerably stronger position to gain a place in a postgraduate course. Some institutions specify a 2:1. Candidates with Third or ordinary degrees are sometimes accepted, provided they have acquired satisfactory professional experience subsequent to graduation.
JCU has graduated over 130 students with the University of Wales UK Honours degree, of which 85 percent graduated with a classification of Second Lower or higher. The following degree classifications were awarded for the period 2002-2009.

If I am also considered a University of Wales student, are there any special policies or benefits that apply to me?
While John Cabot academic policies apply to all students, those participating in the University of Wales validated program are also subject to regulation by the University of Wales in areas such as academic complaints, academic honesty, and appeals procedures. Student Handbooks have been prepared to inform students about the regulations of both institutions. The annual visit by the University of Wales also provides a chance for students to discuss their academic programs as well as career, and graduate school considerations with the Wales examiners. The team is always very accessible to students and happy to help answer any questions students may have about the University of Wales and its validated programs. Students also have access to the Wales Online Library resources.

Nel 2000, la John Cabot University ha siglato un accordo di certificazione dei propri corsi di laurea (validation of degrees) con l’Università del Galles (University of Wales). Grazie a questo accordo, l’Università del Galles conferisce i suoi diplomi di Bachelor of Arts (Honours) agli studenti della John Cabot che si laureano in Economia aziendale, Marketing, Relazioni internazionali e Scienze politiche. Gli studenti che partecipano a questo programma potranno perciò conseguire contemporaneamente un diploma di laurea americano e uno europeo. Il Progamma Wales comprende i seguenti corsi di laurea:

In base all’accordo di certificazione, ogni anno una commissione di docenti dell’Università del Galles visita la JCU per valutare il lavoro svolto dagli studenti, la struttura e i contenuti dei corsi, le procedure e i regolamenti accademici. Questa revisione annuale rappresenta una garanzia che i programmi della JCU siano conformi agli standard di eccellenza delle università britanniche.
Chi può partecipare al Programma Wales?
La partecipazione al Programma Wales è aperta a quegli studenti con una buona conoscenza della lingua inglese (gli studenti che non sono di madre lingua inglese devono soddisfare il criterio di ammissione ai corsi di laurea presso la JCU) e aver fatto l'equivalente di due 'A' Level (generalmente sono considerati idonei gli studenti in possesso di un diploma di maturità italiano o di un International Baccalaureate). (Gli ultimi 60 crediti di studio dovranno essere obbligatoriamente conseguiti in sede). La John Cabot dispone di tutors in grado di valutare i crediti degli studenti interessati.
A che punto del mio percorso accademico posso iscrivermi al Programma Wales? E' possibile ricevere crediti per la maturità e per gli esami già sostenuti presso un'università italiana?
Di norma i programmi della John Cabot University hanno una durata di quattro anni, mentre quelli dell’Università del Galles sono triennali. E’ possibile iscriversi al programma Wales a partire dal secondo anno accademico. Gli studenti in possesso della maturità italiana (ottenuta dopo cinque anni di scuola media superiore) vengono considerati come se avessero già completato il primo anno di studio universitario, quindi possono iscriversi subito al programma Wales. Normalmente, i Bachelor of Arts degrees della John Cabot University e dell’Università del Galles potranno essere conseguiti alla fine dei tre anni di corso. La John Cabot University convalida gli esami già sostenuti presso un’università italiana purchè il voto ottenuto sia almeno di 24/30.
Gli studenti che hanno completato il programma di studio per la laurea della John Cabot University avranno ottenuto i 120 crediti necessari per conseguire una laurea dall'Università del Galles.
Il diploma di laurea conferito dall'Università del Galles è separato dal diploma di laurea conferito dalla John Cabot University?
I due diplomi di laurea sono distinti, ma il titolo dell’Università del Galles può essere conseguito solo dopo che lo studente avrà ottenuto il diploma della John Cabot University. Alla fine del corso di laurea, gli studenti ricevono sia il Bachelor of Arts Degree della John Cabot University che l’Honours Degree dell’Università del Galles. La cerimonia di laurea della John Cabot si svolge a Roma nel mese di maggio, mentre la cerimonia di laurea dell’Università del Galles si svolge ogni anno a Cardiff in Galles. L'Università del Galles incoraggia gli studenti della JCU a partecipare alla cerimonia di laurea del Galles.
Quando avrò conseguito il Bachelor of Arts degree alla Se mi iscrivo alla John Cabot University, riceverò automaticamente il diploma dall’Università del Galles?
No, è necessario iscriversi al programma Wales e pagare una tassa di iscrizione ((€1950 una tantum). Una volta che lo studente è iscritto al Programma Wales, gli verrà assegnato un tutor che lo seguirà per tutto il percorso. I professori della JCU conserveranno esami e tesine che saranno esaminati dai docenti dell’Università del Galles al momento della laurea.
Come vengono stabilite le valutazioni finali (degree classifications) e a che cosa corrispondono?
Ogni anno una commissione di docenti dell’Università del Galles si reca alla John Cabot per valutare in modo assolutamente autonomo e indipendente il lavoro accademico svolto dai candidati. Sarà l’Università del Galles a decidere se conferire o meno ai candidati il diploma di laurea e la votazione finale da assegnare alla laurea:
First-Class Honours (First)
Upper Second-Class Honours (2:1)
Lower Second-Class Honours (2:2)
Third-Class Honours (Third o 3rd)
Ordinary Degree (Pass)
“First-Class Honours ” è il voto più alto e corrisponde alla lode. Normalmente, nel sistema universitario britannico, agli studenti che fanno domanda per lauree specialistiche (postgraduate degrees) è richiesto un voto finale di almeno 2:2. Anche i candidati con un voto equivalente al Third oppure a un Ordinary degree hanno la possibilità - seppur ridotta - di essere ammessi alle lauree specialistiche, purché abbiano acquisito rilevanti esperienze professionali dopo la laurea.
Oltre 130 studenti della JCU hanno ottenuto il diploma dell’Università del Galles. Nel periodo tra il 2002 e il 2009, i nostri laureati hanno conseguito i seguenti risultati:

Ci sono dei regolamenti o dei vantaggi particolari che mi riguardano se mi iscrivo al Programma Wales?
Mentre i regolamenti accademici della John Cabot valgono per tutti gli studenti, chi partecipa al Programma Wales deve uniformarsi anche ai regolamenti accademici dell’Università del Galles per quanto riguarda i reclami, l’onestà accademica e le procedure di appello. Sono stati preparati appositi manuali per informare gli studenti dei regolamenti delle due università.
Nel corso della visita annuale della Commissione dell’Università del Galles, gli studenti hanno la possibilità di discutere con i docenti sia i piani di studio che le prospettive di carriera e di specializzazione post laurea. La Commissione risponderà a qualsiasi domanda che riguarda l’Università del Galles e i suoi programmi.
Gli studenti hanno, inoltre, accesso alle risorse della
Wales Online Library.
I partecipanti al Programma Wales, oltre ad avere i vantaggi della laurea britannica, godono di tutti i benefici che la John Cabot University offre da sempre ai suoi studenti:
